Several local agencies offer programs intended to support autistic individuals and their families during emergencies and encounters with first responders. We’re listing them here so families know what exists. Whether any of them is the right fit is a personal decision — participation in all of these is voluntary, and each family should weigh it based on their own circumstances and comfort level.
“Occupant with Autism” Decals — Lexington Police Department
The Lexington Police Department offers free decals intended to be placed on a vehicle’s rear driver-side window, where first responders can see them on approach. According to the department, the decal doesn’t convey any medical information; it’s a visual cue meant to prompt additional patience and communication techniques during traffic stops, collisions, or roadside emergencies. Decals are free at the front desk of the Lexington Police Department, 111 Maiden Lane, during business hours. The department notes that participation is entirely voluntary. Project Lifesaver — Lexington County Sheriff’s Department
The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department participates in Project Lifesaver, a national program that uses small radio transmitters worn on the wrist or ankle to help locate people who wander from home. Project Lifesaver International identifies autism among the conditions the program is designed for, alongside dementia, Alzheimer’s, and Down syndrome.
