Below is the latest edition of our monthly newsletter.

From The President

Hello South Carolina Autism Society families and friends!  Wow!  We are just a few weeks away from April -- Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month!  We are excited to have so many wonderful events available for you to participate in!

We are very excited about our upcoming Annual Conference on April 15th, featuring Peter Gerhardt. We've selected presenters for eight Breakout Sessions on a variety of topics for all ages and stages. Businesses and organizations can sign up to exhibit in our Resource Fair.  Anyone can nominate someone for one of our Annual Awards.  Click here to register now!  Limited Scholarships are available.

You don't want to miss our upcoming Strides for Autism events, to be held in the Upstate on April 16 and the Midlands on April 30.  It's time to Register to Walk, Create a Team, and ask your family, friends, and co-workers for their support!  See the full Strides article below for information on registration, resource fairs, volunteers and more!

Strides for Autism

Strides for Autism

It’s time to start planning for Strides for Autism 2016!  Strides for Autism is the South Carolina Autism Society’s signature fund-raising and awareness walk. Monies raised for South Carolina Autism Society stay in South Carolina and go towards individual and family supports, education, advocacy, and training. According to the South Carolina Secretary of State, the South Carolina Autism Society devoted nearly 90% of its total expenses to program services.

Register to Participate and Create a Team and ask your family, friends and co-workers to support you!

Annual Conference

Annual Conference

Announcing the South Carolina Autism Society’s Annual Conference, featuring Peter Gerhardt, E.D. as Keynote Speaker, Breakout Sessions, Bookstore, and more!

Date:  Friday, April 15, 2016
Time: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm
Cost:   $75 per person, includes lunch
Location: Medallion Conference Center, 7309 Garners Ferry Road, Columbia, SC  29209

Keynote Speaker — Peter Gerhardt, E.D., is the director of education at the Upper School of the McCarton School and the founding chair of the Scientific Council for the Organization for Autism Research (OAR). He has more than 30 years of experience using the principles of applied behavior analysis in supporting adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in educational, employment, residential, and community-based settings. Dr. Gerhardt is the author or the coauthor of articles and book chapters on the needs of adolescents and adults with ASDs and has presented nationally and internationally on this topic. He serves on the editorial board of Behavior Analysis in Practice and on numerous professional advisory boards. Dr. Gerhardt received his doctorate from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, Graduate School of Education.

Sky Zone Fundraising Night

Friday, April 8

Greenville

Join us at Sky Zone Trampoline Park for a fundraiser to support the South Carolina Autism Society!  Check in between 3 and 7 pm, and $2.50 from each hour jumped will be donated to SCAS!  Spread the word and bring your friends!

SCAS Staff will be on-hand with information about Strides for Autism, and autism services in the Upstate.

Autism Afternoon at Hollywild

Autism Afternoon at Hollywild

Thursday, April 14
4:30 - 8:00 pm

Hollywild is opening for a special time to provide families facing the challenges of autism a fun, safe family outing away from the crowds!   April 14, 2016, 4:30pm – 8:00pm Special Discounted Admission: $5 per person   Representatives of the South Carolina Autism Society will be on hand with information about autism resources.   Experience our Safari Bus Rides where animals come to you for snacks, and keep your eyes peeled for “Tank”, our Southern White Rhino.   Visit our amphitheater for a special “Creature Feature” presentation and meet some of our education animals up close.   Walk the park to see our camels, bears, and tigers. Make sure to stop by “Mandella’s” enclosure to see our white lion! Visit our Farmyard to pet and feed a variety of animals as you enjoy relaxed family time together.

SC Autism Society will be hosting a volunteer training session on March 26, 2016. Participants are required to have a SLED check. Coffee Talk Parent Support April

Upstate Coffee Talk Parent Support

Wednesday, April 6
9 - 11 am
Upstate Office

Monthly coffee talk on the first Wednesday of every month at SCAS upstate office. Families can visit, talk, share resources, and have coffee with homemade goodies. Children are always welcomed, but childcare is not provided.

Midlands Parent Support will resume in May!

April High Schooler Hangout -- Lunch & Movie

April High Schooler Hangout -- Lunch & Movie

Saturday, April 9
9:45 - 1:30 pm
Dutch Square Mall

The movie starts at 10:00 am, so we will meet at the ticket area at AMC Theaters at 9:45 am. We will walk to Best China Buffet when the movie ends at 12:30. The featured movie is Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice and will be in a sensory friendly setting. The restaurant is just a few doors down from the theater so we will walk from one to the other after the movie. We should be finished with lunch by 1:30.

Best China Buffet charges $9.50 for lunch and a drink. The cost is $8.70 for movies. $20 will be sufficient unless they want to buy snacks at the movie, then they should bring more money.

We are happy to announce that we will start offering our workshops across the state in 2016! Stay tuned for schedules in Greenville, Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Lancaster, and Florence!  All 2016 Training sessions will be announced soon through our email lists, social media, and website.

Volunteer Opportunities

Most of our events just wouldn't be possible without the involvement of our wonderful volunteers.  The participation of families, business and community groups, and students is a big part of what makes our events successful.  We appreciate all of your efforts!

Board of Directors

Meetings of the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Autism Society are held quarterly, beginning at 10:00 am at the SC Autism Society, 806 12th Street, West Columbia, SC.

2016 Meeting Dates:

• May 7th

• August 27th

• October 29th (Annual followed by quarterly)

SCAS Members are welcome to attend meetings of the Board of Directors. If you would like to speak at the meeting, please call SCAS 803-750-6988 to be put on the agenda.
