News and Happenings

April 2016

Hello SCAS supporter!

Below is the latest edition of our monthly newsletter.

From The President

It's been an exciting Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month so far!  Today we were honored to be present at the State House in Columbia for the declaration of April as Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month in South Carolina!  Thank you to Senator McElveen and Rep James Smith for being instrumental in passing this resolution and acknowledge the Autism community in South Carolina.

Thank you to everyone who came out to Upstate Strides for Autism last Saturday!  It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces, and to meet lots of new families.  It was truly our best Strides event to date!

But we're not done!  Midlands, now it's your turn!  Midlands Strides for Autism is in just over a week on Saturday, April 30th at Saluda Shoals Park!  We are looking forward to having several new activities this year, along with our familiar walk and resource fair!  Check out the article below and be sure to register now!

We will keep going in May by participating in Midlands Gives, and then holding the annual Deuce's Wild Golf Tournament in Columbia!

In the meantime, if we can be of assistance in any way, please contact us at 803-750-6988, at scas@scautism.org, or visit our website at scautism.org.

Strides for Autism is the South Carolina Autism Society's signature fund-raising and awareness walk. Monies raised for South Carolina Autism Society stay in South Carolina and go towards individual and family supports, education, advocacy, and training. According to the South Carolina Secretary of State, the South Carolina Autism Society devoted nearly 90% of its total expenses to program services.

• Raise the awareness of autism spectrum disorders. The better understanding our society has about autism, the better the quality of life for those on the spectrum will be.

• Raise funds for the South Carolina Autism Society.

Case Management
Our Case Managers work to ensure that the individuals on their caseloads receive the best services to which they are entitled.

Parent School Partnership
Our Parent Mentors work to assist children with autism in reaching their maximum potential in the classroom through appropriate services and accommodations.

Information & Referral
We aim to help provide accurate and timely information to families and professionals about autism spectrum disorders and services available throughout the state.

We regularly provide training to families and professionals about various strategies and supports.  Your support will help us expand this training statewide! Advocacy
We work with policy makers throughout the state to help improve the services available to individuals with autism spectrum disorders.

In addition to our Strides for Autism events, we regularly partner with other community organizations to provide respite and family activities statewide.
