From The President

Hello SCAS friend!

Summer vacations are over, and kids are back to school.  I hope that all of our children with autism are having a good transition to the new academic year.  Please remember that if you need help with school-related issues at any time, our Parent School Partnership program is here to help at no charge.  For almost 20 years, our Parent Mentors have been helping families, individuals, and schools advocate for positive educational outcomes.

We are now just 3 months from Thanksgiving, and that means it's time for our annual Thanksgiving Turkey Drive.  Your donations are needed to help ensure that autism families in South Carolina in financial need can prepare their own Thanksgiving dinner.  See the article in this newsletter for more information.

Please contact us if you have questions, need assistance, or would like to get further involved.  Our main number is 803-750-6988, or visit our website at scautism.org.

Sincerely,

Kim Thomas, President & CEO

Featured SCAS Service

Outreach

One of our important tasks is to educate the community about autism and services available through the South Carolina Autism Society.  We participate in health fairs, community events, and resource fairs by having a staffed table where we can share information and answer questions.

We also have staff available to speak to businesses, organizations, and other community groups about autism and how to be more inclusive in their daily activities.  We've spoken at major corporations, small medical labs, and meetings of Boy Scout leaders, and conducted first responder trainings.

Let us come to your next event or activity!  Click here to fill out our request form.

Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Drive

Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Drive

In 2008, the South Carolina Autism Society and the LUCAS Network first partnered to provide a Thanksgiving dinner to families affected by autism who are going through financial difficulties. Thanks to the community’s donations, almost 900 families in need have been served since 2008. Your donations supported 130 families in 2016 alone! The need continues to grow.

For 2017, we will again be collecting financial donations and distributing grocery store gift cards to recipients.

Your donations allow this beneficial program to continue!

To make an online donation, click here.  You can also send a check made out to the SC Autism Society, with "Turkey Drive" in the memo field.  Mail it to SCAS, 806 12th Street, West Columbia, SC  29169.

Your donation is tax deductible.  Thank you for supporting our families!

Nominations for recipients will open at a later date.  Stay tuned!

Midlands Puberty & Sexuality Workshop

Midlands Puberty & Sexuality Workshop

September 23
9:30 - 11:30 am

The South Carolina Autism Society presents this new 2 hour training on puberty and sexuality.  To navigate puberty we are asked to quickly develop new social skills and implement them correctly. Parents will leave this training with the knowledge to start taking on all the various challenges that come along with puberty and transitioning into adulthood. We cover basic topics such as bodily changes, privacy, and personal hygiene. We will discuss more in depth topics such as consent, safe sex, sexuality and gender identity, intimacy, and healthy relationships. Most importantly, we will be giving the parents the tools they need to actually have “The Talk” with their individuals with ASD.
